Judging the Best in Social Media: The 2014 Small Business Book Awards

The game is afoot! (Hey, how often do you find a reason to quote Sherlock Holmes?)

I’m excited to announce that I have been selected as a judge for the 2014 Small Business Book Awards. Now in their sixth year, the awards recognize the best books from the previous year, and entrepreneurs, small business owners, CEOs, and more get the chance to nominate, show support for, and vote for their favorite business books of 2013.

This means you.

And, yes, I have nominated books in the past.

Seeking useful, fresh, and quality content.

This is the first year that a panel of judges will be selecting the most noteworthy books. Ivana Taylor, the book editor for Small Business Trends (which produces the awards), said that the judges were chosen “from a pool of small business enthusiasts.” She added that they were “looking for a mix of skills so that the judges can accurately make a decision on the finalists.”

I’ll be judging in the social media category alongside Melanie Forman, a meeting and events planner in Philadelphia, and Shelley Webb, a social media strategist in Coeur d’Alene. The other categories for this year’s awards are marketing, management, economics, technology, startup, and leadership.

Good books. Backed by a great business resource.

The Small Business Book Awards are the brainchild of Anita Campbell, CEO of online publication Small Business Trends. I first “met” Campbell a few years ago when I interviewed her for a column on smart financial management. If you don’t know her site, you might want to bookmark it or grab the RSS feed. Small Business Trends is one of the best all-around resources for business owners, featuring content that ranges from the latest Facebook changes to tax tips to advice for selecting your next laptop or tablet.

Now’s it’s your turn.

Nominate your favorite books from last year. What great business books have you read lately?
